Week 1
January 5-7
-Saw the movie Hidden Figures. The movie was about African- American women assisting with the science behind getting the first American into space. The women highlighted in the film broke many barriers becoming some of the first African- American women to make strides in the NASA program. Truly an inspiring film!
Week 2
January 8-14
-Read African Folktales for my Black Diaspora Lit class. I was very intrigued by the discussion that ensued in class. It is very amazing to see that those of different ethnicities can relate to these stories in different ways.
Week 3
January 15-21
-There was a discussion on Twitter in regards to the new president. A black female pointed out the fact that she would like people to continue to call President-Elect Trump by simply Trump instead of President Trump since there were so many people that refused to use the title of President when referring to President Barack Obama. This debate essentially turned into blacks versus white. The interesting part to me was the reasoning behind not using President for Present Barack Obama was simply the color of his skin in their blatant racism, but the reasoning behind not using President is because he is not considered qualified for the position.
Week 4
January 22-28
-Trump hasn't been in office very long at all and he has wasted NO time turning our entire country upside down. It's amazing how one man can put fear into sooo many people. Mainly the minorities of this country are worried about their lives for the next four years and how they will be drastically changed by the policies of our new president. His lack of appreciation of diversity is very evident already through his cabinet selection being majority white and over half of those being males. I am hoping that despite his openness against all minorities based not alone of race, but gender, religion, ad sexual preference as well that the minorities will be able to preserve, survive, and prosper through the negativity
Week 5
January 29- February 4
- The latest in the Trump presidency is the Muslim Ban. It is so OUTRAGEOUS that people who live here and have for many years are unable to come back to their homes. These people that are being detained have actual careers and family in this country that they can NOT get to. I was reading a story about a Clemson professor who is being detained. Imagine that, coming to class on Monday expecting to see your professor walk through the door and finding out that they have been detained in the Muslim Ban nonsense from the newest leader of the free world.
-Today in class there was a female, whose name I don't even know, who questioned my intelligence based on the area that I was raised and attended school. I was appalled, flabbergasted, and flat out disgusted that where I came from, largely minority area, was a basis of judgement for my fellow classmate!
Week 6
February 5-11
- In my Black Diaspora class, we read a story called 'Separation Anxiety' in a book named Dark Matter. It was a interesting story about the world in 22nd century where the government has decided to separate people by races to persevere their cultures. This started a debate in our class of whether cultures should be separated or not. Many that participated concluded that there definitely should be a mixed of cultures because it is imperative to know about other cultures and learn other things outside of your own culture. This creates well informed individuals who are truly able to respect people that are different from them.
Week 7
February 12-18
- My Black Diaspora Lit class discussed the issue of minorities having their music remade by their white counterparts and making way more fame and fortune from it. This conversation came about because of It was a very interesting debate that continued into the other aspects of life whether that be science, fashion, or even literature. The 'stealing' of ideas and products from blacks was a VERY common aspect because black people were oftentimes tricked because of their lack of reading abilities.
Week 8
February 19-25
- There was an event called Africa Night that took place over the weekend. The production included dances, a fashion portion, and a play. The African culture was displayed and I was blown away. Even though, the performance was attempting to represent and expose the audience to Africa, it also included themes that were relatable to all cultures. This opened up my eyes. I was challenged to not point out and focus on the differences of various people and cultures, but to discover and create similarities. I was reminded to keep an open mind and always be willing to learn about others who are not necessarily the same as me.
- I found myself, while completing the assignments for Execution of Justice, looking at issues of LGBTQ community. I am appalled that people cannot understand that the heart wants what the heart wants. You should not be judged and punished because of it.
Week 14
April 2-8
When we think of diversity and minority groups, very often we think of black and white, male and female. However sexual orientation can also be a source of diversity. Those who identify with the LGBTQ community get a lot of heat and criticism and discrimination because of their preferences. I am glad that they now have a wellness center created. I hope that other places can takes notes from the University of Miami Hospital and also start developing more safe haven places. http://southfloridagaynews.com/Local/university-of-miami-hospital-opens-lgbtq-wellness-center.html
